Mews Cafe @ Muntri Mews

In Breakfast, Dessert, Drinks, Mix cuisines on July 3, 2011 at 11:18 pm

Muntri Mews is a new boutique hotel located on Muntri Street. The building is part of the UNESCO heritage city protective site. Right opposite Muntri Mews is another new addition to Georgetown, a chic hostel called Ryokan.

Here’s a little information about the street and the building taken from Muntri Mews’ official site.

“Muntri Street has perhaps the best preserved rows of 19th Straits Chinese architecture in Malaysia, equivalent to Singapore’s Emerald Hill.

The grade 2 listed building was formerly the stables and carriage works of the street’s grandest terraces. Carriages were kept below while drivers and staff were housed above in 12 worker’s quarters. In the Edwardian period it became a garage for some of the smartest cars in Penang.”

The menu is fairly small. On the day we went, the Gado Gado was their daily special. A special request was made to veganize the Gado Gado. On their fixed menu, the only hot food item is for lacto-ovo vegetarians – an egg & cheese/tomato croissant. Two of their desserts are vegan friendly while most of the rest contain dairy and/or eggs.

Food ordered:

1. Gado gado (veganized, usually comes with hard-boiled eggs and shrimps)

2 & 3.  Cheng Th’ng (longan, winter melon, sea coconut, red dates and sugar) – available two ways, hot or cold.

4 & 5. Sago gula melaka with gula melaka and coconut milk

6. Long iced melon tea ( macadamia and watermelon syrup, tea and mint)

Chai Diam Ma

In Drinks, Mix cuisines on June 26, 2011 at 4:03 pm

A Herbivore in Penang supports locally owned small businesses, artists and handmade products.

Chai Diam Ma manages to step right in and fit the bill perfectly on all accounts.

Chai Diam Ma means ‘little sundry shop’ in Hokkien, the lingua franca of Penang. The little sundry shops from the yesteryear will evoke nostalgia for those born before the 90’s as it was the go to place to buy little snacks after school. Now with hyper-marts mushrooming faster than one can keep track, most sundry shops are as hard to find as four leaf clovers.

Queen Lee’s devotion to create a space for local artists to showcase their works and preserve a piece of the local’s old Penang is admirable.

The shop is peppered with knick knacks from top to bottom. Most furnitures were rescued from being dumped into landfills and were given a coat of paint or adored with drawings.

Their menu is small. They have one food item that is vegetarian, besides cakes. Do note that their cakes aren’t vegan. We were full from brunch when we visited. A second visit will follow to try their udon noodles with mushrooms.

Food pictures:

1. Brownie with ice-cream

2. Iced wild flower honey drink

Bora Bora by Sunset | Revisited

In Drinks, Mix cuisines on June 26, 2011 at 12:32 am

A second visit to Bora Bora to catch the sunset and to see if their menu is herbivore friendly.

Firstly, directions. The place at first glance can be tricky to find as it’s housed behind a row of stalls selling souvenirs. Coming from the city and using Happy Mart and Desire Foot Reflexology as landmarks, look to your right and you will find a series of the stalls. When on foot, look for this board.

Walk on the path with the stalls on your left till you reach the end. Alternatively there are other ways of entering but for the first time, this might be the clearest. Once you’re near the beach, you’ll be able to spot Bora Bora easily.

A few items were vegetarian besides french fries and onion rings. There’s a pasta dish, bruschetta and pizza.

Food pictures:

1. Vegetable Pizza (veganized)

2. Lime juice
